The tour starts from the Church of San Crisogono, which was built in the late Middle Ages and now has the appearance of a typical roman baroque church. Hidden in its undergrounds there are well visible traces, with various frescoes, of the original basilica of the 5th century. We will descend 20 feet under the street level to discover the old walls and structures, the frescoes from the 5th to the 12th century as well as many inscriptions and sarcophagi in a unique journey through history.
Then we will walk through the hidden lanes of Trastevere to reach the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere to visit the beautiful baroque church, the walls and the decoration, mosaics, shrines, columns of the roman houses of Saint Cecilia’s family. Here many rooms and even the granary are preserved almost intact. This tour is a unique chance to discover Rome’s hidden treasures away from the mass tourism routes.
