The Easter Story: from the Catacombs to Mel Gibson
Of all the many stories and subjects of western art, the Passion of Christ is certainly one of the most dramatic and also one of the most popular. We will discuss how the story has been converted into some of the most iconic artworks from early Christian art, to Medieval and Gothic art, to the Renaissance, and then to contemporary art. Iconic masterpieces like la Pietá by Michelangelo, and several paintings and frescoes by the great masters, including one panel in the Sistine Chapel, have told some aspects of this powerful story. We will also discuss how it has been adapted and translated into plays and movies with some surprises and unexpected details!
Ps Easter is about death, sin, forgiveness, and rebirth, hence you don’t need to be a Christian to appreciate or understand the Easter Story.
PPS And No, this is not about the Easter Bunny, we’ll save his story for another time :).
